Music

For Christmas, I got an iPod nano, so I've been doing a lot of downloading lately - and a lot of thinking about my favorite Christian music. I've got some of my CD's on there now - Underoath, Kutless, etc. - and I've downloaded some of favorites from Jeremy Camp, Sanctus Real, and Casting Crowns, as well as some other songs I've discovered on Air1.

So anyway, all this thinking about music got me thinking about our youth group. Music seems to be missing from our youth group. We rarely have a worship time anymore, and no one seems interested in Christian music at all. Sometimes I wonder how many of our members really know what's out there in the world of Christian music. How many of our members are listening to secular music that reflects nothing of our worldview simply because they don't know that there's something better? I wish we were still involved with Interlinc. That's the company that used to send us music videos and CD's. It was expensive (that's why we canceled our subscription) but I think it was worth it to stay up-to-date on the Christian music scene.

So what are you into? What would you like to see happen in our youth group when it comes to music?

I really liked the last concert we went to. I thought that was a lot of fun. I know not everybody likes stuff like that, but I do, and I know several others do too. So, what's next? What other concerts do we want to be on the look out for?

Personally, I was so moved by Seventh Day Slumber that I wouldn't mind seeing them again, if only to hear their awesome testimony once more. I would also like to see Jeremy Camp in concert some time, and I hear that Casting Crown concerts are awesome worship experiences (they still lead worship in their church's youth group - isn't that awesome?!).

I would also like to see our Wednesday night services having more musical life. Maybe you noticed that Aaron played some videos from the Wow 2006 DVD before we got started this Wednesday. We're trying to get music to become a more noteworthy part of our youth group. This goes also for our worship time. What would you guys like to see happen there? Wouldn't it be cool if we had a youth-led band to lead worship? What are the possibilities there?

Let us hear your thoughts! (btw - no prize for this one, just a general topic for topic's sake)

Oh Man... I don't even know where to begin. Well I like Casting Crowns(by the way, there concert was awsome), Matthew West, Superchick, Kutless, Audio Adrenaline, Brian Litrell, Sanctus Real, Seventh Day Slumber, but most of all I like Hawk Nelson. Not many people have heard of Hawk Nelson, but they are a Christian band. Actually all these are Christian bands! ;D
I only listen to Christian music because that was what I grew up listening to. That's ok though because I love it.

I think why we haven't been singing much music on Wednesday nights is because my dad gets tired of people playing around and not singing. He really takes worshiping seriously and he wishes that the youth would worship more than playing around making a joke of themselves.
Yeah, I do wish we had more singing in part of the Wednesday night schedule. I really enjoy singing. Actually, I wish we could spend more time together and start at 6:00 so there would be more time for singing and still get out on time.

I love music! I've been fond of music since I was 2 and I am still just as excited about it now as I was then. :]

I've listened to about every style that there is out there, but I always come back to Christian music. It's the most satisfying to listen to, because it's not just words and sounds, it has a purpose and it expresses our relationship with God. :]

I thought the music videos on Wednesday was awesome! I really liked that. :)
I wish we did have more music oriented stuff on Wednesday, even though I don't have the greatest voice ever. ;P
I just wish the people around wanted that too, because they seem more interested in chatting with their friends or just stand there not doing anything. :/ I'm not quite sure what to do to fix that though.

Aww Melody, you can too sing. U sing great. :] Everybody can sing (even JD :0 ) they just have to practice or something like that. ;]
Yeah I don't know what to do about the people who would rather chat with friends than worship. I mean I love to talk with my friends to but there is time for that before and after we have worship.

Wow, don't you just love it when you discover a great new song. I just discovered one by Phil Wickham called "Divine Romance". I suggest everyone go right now to iTunes and download it. It's awesome. I love it.

Who is Phil Whickham?
Ooo. Tell what the song is about.

Personally , I like to record my own voice and sing. I've recently been compared to artists such as Nick Lachey , and them spanish dudes from Il Divo.

I like music just fine, but I dont really enjoy singing. I mean, musical worship isn't really my thing. I enjoy it alright, just not quite as much as everyone else.

I like some Christian music, I like Audio Adreniline...:( they go bye-bye....Audioslave, Kutless, Under the Red, Relient K, Matthew West among others...

But I also like secular music. I don't really think that is a "bad" thing...I just think it doesn't have quite the meaning of Christian music. I like The Fray, some of Taking Back Sunday, some of My Chemical Romance, The White Stripes, Pinhead Gunpowder, Lorien, Jupiter Sunrise, ZZTop, Eric Clapton, Led Zepplin, Peter Frampton, Aerosmith, Five for Fighting, Modest Mouse... some others I can't quite remember...

If it seems that I listen to more secualr music than Christian music, it is because I do. I don't know why, sometimes Christian music has just a bunch of the same sounding bands...I really did agree with the speaker this past sunday in that, listening to only Christian music can get boring...at least in my opinon that is really true.

No, there's nothing wrong with secular music, but I rarely, if ever, get "bored" with Christian music. There's plenty of variations - you just have to know where to find it. But I think Melody said it best...

"It's the most satisfying to listen to, because it's not just words and sounds, it has a purpose and it expresses our relationship with God."

That's how I wish we'd all start seeing it.

At least when it comes to our youth group, I'd really like to see us have a more active interest in music. It'd be great if we could get excited about going to a concert or a worship service because we all share the same enthusiasm for praising God in this way. Whether we think it's "our thing" or not, it's important and should be a part of our youth group.

Oh yeah...I'd never actually heard of Phil Wickham myself, but the song is amazing. Maybe I just heard it at the right time or something, but it nearly moved me to tears. Nothing special, just a great praise song that reminded me of how blessed we are to know Christ.

Yeah! Well, sometimes when I feel down, I will just listen to something that is more upbeat like Skillet or Hawk Nelson. Jason is right in the fact that there are so many genres of Christian music that once you get tired of one genre, you just listen to another genre.

Yeah, all of these have made great points. I think I don't listen to as much Christian music as I would like to. I dunno, I think music with a Christian meaning has got to be special for me, Sometimes I find myself thinking " This band just doesn't seem convincing." SOmetimes some Christian music bands doesnt have the heart of some other Christian music bands.

I really hope I find more that I can love. Right now Audio Adrenaline and Kutless are dominating..I suppose its just Kutless because AA is bye-bye.:(

Yeah, that's very true. I hear a lot of bands that claim to be Christian but just don't do it for me. It has to mean something.

That doesn't mean it has to have clear Christian lyrics. One of my favorite bands right now is Underoath. I don't always understand them of course (much of it I can actually). But even in not understanding the words, I can feel the power of the music. They just have that effect on me. I know they're Christians and when I hear their music, it empowers me as a Christian - words or no words. And when the words ARE clear, it's awesome. Their song "To Whom It May Concern" is an awesome message I'd like to pass on to you guys.

But that's just one band. There's other bands that don't have that effect on me - bands that are just like them. It's just one of those things you have to feel.

As for other stuff...well, on my iPod I've got, to name a few...

3 songs by Jeremy Camp - "Lay Down My Pride", "Tonight," and "Take My Life".

"Savior" by Skillet, and I've been meaning to download "Rebirthing"

A couple songs by Sanctus Real, including "I'm Not Alright", which I love.

Casting Crowns - "Praise You in This Storm" and "Set Me Free"

Jonah33 - "Faith Like That". I should listen to some of their other stuff...

Todd Agnew's version of "Grace Like Rain" - though it's not the same as the one they play on air1. I was a little disappointed.

"Miracle" by Story Side B is a great song.

Then there's my CD's - Kutless, Underoath, Blindside...

And I'm gonna download Seventh Day Slumber's entire album as soon as I get a new iTunes card.

That's just a small bit of what I personally like. Lot's of different stuff there. I like Air1 because I can discover a lot of stuff. They don't usually play anything much harder than Skillet, so I have to find that stuff from other sources, but I usually can. Sometimes you can get sample CD's from places like Lifeway, and iTunes is good about suggesting music if they know what I like. And of course, there's concerts! No better way to discover a new band than to hear them live!

Anyway, that's my thing...

OH! CRAP! That one that I left off! Underoath! Geez I love that band! Yeah, one of the things that I love about them is they let their faith be known, but still have music that non-believers listen to and they can slowly be accustomed to the gospel!

I freakin love Underoath!
