This song was thought to have beed written by Martin Luther for his children & was named "Luther's Cradle Hymn". The song was passed on by German mothers. But research discounts this claim, however. Stanzas one & two first appeared in the Little Children's Book, published in 1885. The third verse was written by a Methodist mimister, John T. McFarland, in the early 1900's.

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus lay down His sweet head; the stars in the sky looked down where He lay, the little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the Baby awaks, but little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes; I love thee, Lord Jesus! look down from the sky, and stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay close by me forever, and love me, I pray; bless all the dear children in Thy tender care, and fit us for heaven, to live with Thee there.

I like that song Sarah. ;D Melody is right. They are extra special! I have a whole lot of Christmas songs but I have got to say that my most favorite song is "Angels We Have Heard On High" and "Emmanuel" sung by Michael W. Smith :)
