The Story Behind The Song

I read this morning in my devotions book. About the story behind the song IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL & I wanted to share it with you.

The words to the song are by: Horatio G. Spafford

He was a successful attorney in Chicago. He was the father of four daughters, an active member of the Presbyterian church & loyal friend & supporter of D.L. Moody. That was at the time of the great Chicago fire of 1871 which wiped the family's extensive real estate invesments. When Mr. Moody & his music associate , Ira Sankey, left for Great Britain for an evangelistic campaign.Mr. Spafford decided to lift the spirts of his family by taking them on a vaction to Europe. In Nov. 1873, Spafford was detained by urgent business, but sent his wife & doughters as scheduled on the S.S. Ville du Harve, planning to join them soon. Halfway across the Atlantic, the ship was struch by an English vessel and sank in 12 minutes. All four of the Spafford girls- Tanetta, Maggie, Annie, & Bessie- were among the 226 who drowned. Mrs. Spafford was amoung the few who were miraculously saved. Mr. Spafford soon joined his sorrowing wife in Cardiff, Whles. While the on the ship he wrote the words to what would later become the song IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL after Philip Bliss wrote the music.

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL

When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like seabillows roll- whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well with my soul.

Tho Satan should buffet, tho trials should come, let this blet assurance control, that Christ hath regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed His own blood for my soul

And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll: the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend, "Evan so"- it is well with my soul.

Chorus: It is well my soul; it is well with my soul.

If you like this I will try to do some more.

It's always cool to hear the story behind a great song - especially hymns, 'cause they usually have really good stories behind them.

Good to hear from you again, Sarah.
